How often do I need an eye exam?

You should have an eye exam at least every two years, even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses. Eye diseases, like many other health conditions, don’t necessarily cause any symptoms in their early stages. Additionally, changes to your visual clarity are often slow to develop, and you might not realize that you need corrective lenses.

If you do wear glasses or contacts, you should have an annual exam to make sure your prescription is up-to-date.

Children should start to have regular eye exams around the time they turn 3. Also, after you turn 60, you should have annual eye exams as your risk of eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration increase.

What should I expect during an eye exam?

Your optometrist begins your eye exam with a conversation about your vision, eyes, and overall health. Then, they start a series of tests to evaluate your vision and eye health. Some of the standard tests include:

  • Visual acuity
  • Color blindness
  • Cover tests (how your eyes work independently and together)
  • Eye movement
  • Depth perception
  • Slit lamp exam
  • Glaucoma tests
  • Retina scans
  • Visual field tests

If you need corrective lenses, your optometrists use retinoscopy and refraction to identify your prescription.

West Broward Eyecare Associates uses state-of-the-art equipment to assess your vision and eye health, including:

  • Computer-assisted refraction
  • Digital photography
  • Computerized visual field testing
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging
  • Computerized corneal mapping
  • Diopsys® testing

These innovative tools allow your optometrist to get accurate information about your eyes quickly and easily, so you can count on outstanding, personalized treatments and services.

Why are eye exams important?

You use your eyes for everything, from navigating your way to the kitchen for breakfast to scrolling through your phone at bedtime. Routine eye exams ensure that you continue to see clearly and that your eyes are healthy.

Many eye conditions don’t cause noticeable symptoms until they permanently damage your vision. An eye exam is often the only way to find out if there’s a problem, so you can get the treatment you need to protect your eyes.
